This is not a corporate version of Inferno, where you must be punished for not atoning for your sins. The seven deadly sins. It doesn't mean that you'll spend a lifetime looking for a job, but it can happen. The first rule in the office is no one is indispensable. If you heed this one, then you are certain of salvation. It's not promotion after your first year in the office; it won't be winning the lottery either.

What are the seven deadly sins in the office? If you know your Bible, then you can recite the list in seconds. But there's a twist. Here it is:

Anger. There are many instances to lose your fuse. A colleague you can't stand and a petty incident will be the reason behind it. A growing suspicion that your boss does not recognize your worth in the company. Stress (and other things that you have little control over it.) If you think there's a need to assert yourself in the workplace, then think twice. Your workmates may look at it differently, such as your days in the office will be numbered if it will affect your relationship with them. Seething in silence may not be the best option, but it will turn out to be a sensible one.

Covetousness. You wish your right hand on your colleague's sexy girlfriend. You imagine the warm seat of your boss's brand new car. You're sitting on your desk, pitying yourself on your so-called sad state of affairs. All of these things can be a waste of time. You may lose your sense of urgency, even forget the tasks that you are supposed to do. And your colleagues will notice it sooner than you think.

Envy. You're envious of your colleague's promotion without thinking that it can happen to you as well. Just keep on working.

Gluttony. Excess is a virtue in Western life. A week won't be complete without the midweek boozing, which will affect your focus the following day. You eat a lot, which is supposed to make you energetic. You become sleepy instead. What you put into your mouth is as important as what you put into your head.

Lust. Before you embark on a relationship in the office, then think long and hard about it. Will this affect your performance? Will there be a change in your relationship with your colleagues? How about the heartache? If your answer is in the affirmative, then think about the possible consequences. Otherwise, don't ask yourself these set of questions if you don't see yourself working in the same place for years.

Pride. Team play is more important in the workplace, but it doesn't mean that assertiveness is not a virtue. Proud people are usually lousy team players, so make sure that you're not buffing up your own self-importance. And you're not doing it at the expense of your colleagues.

Sloth. If you believe that you deserve your wage, then you must do something productive for your company. There are cases when it's determined by the culture of the office you're working in but look at it this way. You can't take it easy while your colleagues are about to get stressed out from a whole day's work.
